TOR CESAY @ MAIDA VALE

Every month on my show we allow an artist to bless us with a live session direct from the legendary BBC Maida Vale studios. We call them The Jam Sessions and this month, the first lady of UK HipHop Tor smacked it with an acoustic 3 track set – our first of 2009. She absolutely smacked it – her voice sounds stronger than ever and her songs are tight.

You can listen back to the full session on the BBC iPlayer and it’s now available for you to watch:

Hold tight for a free downloadable track from the session coming soon to my BBC blog and make sure you go cop Tor’s new CD ‘Beatz International’ if you like what you hear.

P-MONEY FT VINCE HARDER – EVERYTHING

I’ve been playing it since Zane Lowe gave me a copy in August. I made it the last Jam Hot of 2008. The buzz on this record is growing and growing and everyone that’s heard it seems to love it (including Trevor Nelson, Ronnie Herel…) I am of course talking about P-Money ft Vince Harder’s “Everything”. No, not the London grime emcee P Money, the New Zealand beatsmith and producer of Akon P-Money.

In it’s native New Zealand, the record spent 3 weeks at number 1 in their main chart and a subsequent 5 months in the top 30. It’s certified platinum over there and it did all of this on downloads only. In Australia, it was the #1 added record at radio and has sat consistently in the top 10 of the club chart. The video is on near constant rotation in NZ and oz…and I think it could be a huge record in the UK if only a UK label were to pick up on it.

For me, it’s got that Kid Cudi ‘Day N Nite’ feel about it in that it crosses boundaries – it’s a bit dance, a bit electro, a bit soul, a bit HipHop and a bit R&B.

All we need is a funky remix….

SUNGLASSES AT NIGHT

Here’s the new video for Skepta’s “Sunglasses At Nite” directed by Mo

Available for download on March 16th 2009 taken from Skepta’s second album “Microphone Champion”. What do you think – boy better KNOW or boy better NO!?

CHIP DIDDY CHIP – VIDEO

DJ B is bonkers – this record is huge and it sounds even better with the video:

It’s in HQ – click here if your web connection isn’t up to it.

One question though – how many more years can Adam Deacon get away with playing a school kid?

FEMIDENT FEMIDENT, YEAH!

My journey home ritual involves running for the train, getting a table, pulling out my laptop and then watching American comedy shows on DVD until I get home. In the last few months, I’ve managed to get through 6 seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm, 5 seasons of Entourage, a season of Arrested Development and a season of Flight Of The Conchords – the second season of which has just started on telly in the states. We have to wait until April until we can see season 2 however some kind soul has upped the first episode to YouTube.

ROCK GOES THE WEEZY

The new Lil Wayne single “Prom Queen” from his forthcoming new album “The Rebirth” sees Weezy F Baby ditching drum machines and samples for guitars and live drums.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

After signing Kevin Rudolf to Ca$h Money, making ‘Party Like A Rockstar’ and recording with Fallout Boy, this isn’t entirely a huge departure or a major shock for anyone who’s been following Lil Wayne’s career. The question is, is the track any good. It sounds no different to anything I’ve heard from people like My Chemical Romance or Panic At The Disco – any emos reading this blog? What do you think?

BIGGIE > 2PAC

I decided to clarify my stance on the debate that’s been raging in HipHop for the past decade on my Twitter today (sidebar – I was on Twitter when it was a BETA so don’t ramp – yes, I am a geek) and it seems that the great and the good who are my Twitter friends seem to agree with me:

Biggie is and was better than 2Pac.

ABC’s

What you know about K’Naan – The Dusty Foot Philosopher?

From Somalia, K’Naan has been putting in the work on the underground for a good while now – this is his new Old Skool flavoured single “ABC’s” featuring the NY HipHop legend Chubb Rock. Good to see some big African HipHop.

MISTAJAM ON RADIO 1

So, some of you may know and some of you will get to know but as well as on 1Xtra, I’m also on Radio 1 every Saturday night/Sunday morning between 3-5am and this week, the show was extra hot if I may say so myself!

1Xtra's Mixtape with MistaJam

We played the MPHO mixtape I was raving about last week, I jumped in the mix with a pretty sick 20 minute Dubstep, Grime and Bassline mix and we had big music from the likes of Total Science & MC Conrad (the new Lenzman mix of Soul Patrol which is amazing), Biggie and his son CJ, this week’s Jam Hot from B.o.B and Jamie Foxx’s epic remix of Blame It featuring N.O.R.E, Busta Rhymes, Yung Joc, Freeway, Lil’ Wayne and T-Pain. I was also challenged by listener Soraya from Rugby to mix Kevin Rudolf into BeyoncĂ© and then into Chris Cornell’s Bond Theme.

You can check it out here on the BBC iPlayer for the next 7 days. Let me know your thoughts and interact with the show via my new Facebook Page and if you’re coming home from a club; driving a truck or suffering from a dose of insomnia don’t forget to check it out live every Saturday night/Sunday morning between 3-5am.

MPHO & THE ART OF POP – FREE DOWNLOAD

aka my new favourite mixtape!

The artist formerly known as Mpho Skeef has been grafting and grinding on every underground music scene you could name over the past few years and after a long wait, she’s finally ready to unleash her album ‘Pop Art’ later in 2009.

To bring you up to speed with what to expect, she hooked up with her deejay DJ Beware and put together one of the sickest mixtapes I’ve ever heard. No marketing BS – REAL TALK. The mixing, track selection and mashups are so on point I’m envious. I’m even playing it out on my Radio 1 show this week, IT’S THAT GOOD!! Like a crazy woman, MPHO is giving it away for free here. Check this for a tracklisting: (more…)
