IS THAT YOU?

Randy & JRock, formerly of Big Brovaz, have got a new project out on road. Called ‘Party Dark’, they’ve put together a “new” record called ‘Is That You’ due for release soon on the revamped legendary Dance label Champion:

Hearing it, if you’re anything like me, you’re thinking, damn this sounds familiar. You might have even tweeted Bless Beats saying “That new tune ‘Is That You’, is that you?” Turns out no, it isn’t Bless Beats on production. No, it isn’t Nick Bridges aka Bodyrox on production either nor is it D.Ramirez even though the record sounds like a straight photocopy of:

with a little of this:

So my question to you blog readers is this: when does being influenced by something turn into a straight rip off? Should JRock & Randy get their chequebooks out and give Bless Beats, Wiley, D Ramirez & Bodyrox a little P for taking their ideas and tweaking them slightly or is it fair game? Have they done enough with the initial idea and sound to make it their own?

SPEECHLESS

A few weeks ago, I gave Breakage ft Donae’o’s single “Speechless” it’s first radio spin on my saturday night show. The record itself is one of my favourites at the moment – pure deep sincerity in lyrics, Donae’o’s vocal performance and sheer unashamed epicness of the beat that Breakage has cooked up. Now, there’s an official video and it pretty much does what it says on the tin, it will leave you speechless…

The bar has been set…Not too sure what Maxi Jazz has got against Donae’o though ;)

Taken from the forthcoming album ‘Foundation’ released soon on Digital Soundboy Recordings.

PROFESSOR GREEN – I NEED YOU TONIGHT VIDEO

Here’s the brand new video for the debut major label single from one of our scene’s major lyrical talents – Professor Green. I remember him playing me the demo version of this record about a year ago and me saying he’d never clear that INXS sample… Fast forward a year later and it’s his lead single from his forthcoming album ‘Alive Til I’m Dead’ – the power of persistence & doing something constructive with a sample eh?!

I’m hoping for big things for this record. It’s accessible but lyrical. Familiar but credible. Well produced It deserves to ‘Pass Out’ if you get my drift. As someone who’s supported Green since day one (a good long time ago – he’s more than paid his dues 3 times over), it’s also really good to see him doing something on a big scale with decent backing. He’s come a long way since the days when I had to get him in a headlock for swearing live on radio at UK Takeover 4:

BIGZ FT SWAY – HOME SWEET HOME VIDEO

Previously on the blog, Sian Anderson was singing Bigz’ praises thanks to his ‘Flight of the Navigator’ mixtape. Well, it’s only right that we post the video to one of the tracks from the mixtape. Bigz & Sway link up for ‘Home Sweet Home’ – one of the biggest Flygeria & Blackstars link ups since the African Cup of Nations…

R.I.O FREESTYLE

One of Manny’s finest sprays some FIRE bars for my boy DJ Q’s 1Xtra show. This video shot by Graphic State of Mind has to be one of the nicest looking videos of someone spitting in the 1Xtra studios…

Keep a look out for R.I.O’s Narrow Roads out in April. Big up to Lew Bark for the heads up.

SUSHI RIDDIM

The Winning Music Team

On Wednesday night my Radio 1Xtra show came live from the newly acquired studio of Redlight & Toddla T in West London for future music week of Radio 1Xtra’s Homegrown Month. Setting the badman producers a challenge of creating a track from scratch to completion in 3 hours wasn’t enough. I got samples from some of my fellow Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra colleagues that they had to incorporate into the track (big up to Mary Anne Hobbs for the idea!) including the sound of Annie Mac mimicking Shakira’s She Wolf howl, Donae’o shouting ‘SUSHI’ and Huw Stephens bellowing “pancake” in welsh. To make it even more complex, we got some top flight vocalists to come and sid dung toppa di riddim, sid dung untoppadi vershan: J2K, Roses Gabor, Lady Chann & Jammer. Here’s the highlights from the ‘making of’ the track:

The resulting track, the ‘SUSHI RIDDIM’ is available for you to download for free & keep forever. Marvel at what can happen when you take a whole load of talent, 3 hours and a recording studio with paint barely dry on the walls.

BASHY’S F64

With this one, the F in the F64 stands for f**ked. Too many quotables, too many lines…. JHEEZ!! No Warburtons – watch it and see for yourself:

6 minutes of straight FIRE spitting! Plus the film he’s in ‘Shank’ is released nationally on 23rd March (film promo company, holla at us, we need to see that preview!) and the new single ‘When The Sky Falls’ is out on 15th March; Bish Bash Bosh is bringing the fire to the people right now! Big ups to Bashy, CJ, Des, George & the GGi team – can we get a Bish Bash Bosh range of gas masks?

What do you think? Is this the most fire F64 so far?
