RUSKO’S SEPT 09 GUEST MIX
Following public demand…Here’s Rusko’s guest mix from this week for you to listen again to at your leisure!
Congrats to Rusko who is due to join the 1Xtra family in October as part of the ‘In New 1Xtra DJ’s We Trust’ rotation with Twin B, Footloose and Redlight (aka Clipz). Expect him to deliver a good 3 hour slab of Dubstep every month the standard of which is above and on display in his amazing guest mix. Nice!
EMALKAY – WHEN I LOOK AT YOU
You know this song has to be special for me to be posting a YouTube video of a low res version of the track don’t you?
The Birmingham Dub Police representer passed through the 1Xtra studio tonight and killed it in his mix for our “Future Of Dubstep” night – we had him, 16 Bit and Lost in all spinning rather sick guest mixes. Will post the iPlayer link soon as its up. Until then, get ready to loop the above & fall in love!
R.I.P MICHAEL JOSEPH JACKSON 1958-2009

I could write something about how I feel about Michael Jackson but Sway has nailed it:
Jackson, Jackson,
The legend Michael Jackson,
Forever remember where you was when it happened,
Everybody staring at phones reading their flashes
In hope it was just a rumour and sooner we’ll get the facts in.
I’ll always remember the spot where I was standing
Exact same spot where I felt like collapsing.
Our relationship with music he has always been the captain
Even after confirmation it sunk, it never sank in.
The same year I was born Michael brought you “Thriller”.
Funny the 1st ever album that I was brought was Thriller.
Out of this world his moonwalk done brought us all together.
An important figure can’t figure a human force that’s bigger.
It wasn’t right how the media handled Mike
Disgusting how they’re always discussing if he was black or white.
His mum was black, his dad was black so it aint rocket science to say he’s black alright.
But that didn’t matter to him, cause he was not racist.
Self proclaimed “Bad” thus he caught cases
There ain’t a smooth criminal without court cases.
Said he was touching, I said he was touching all nations,
Even before “Dangerous” he’s like a thousand times bigger than rest
Rewind his tape like a thousand times Elvis was a great and Lennon was a Legend and Michael J was like both over a thousand times.
They said that his sales declined but after about 750 million what’s left to yell about?
There ain’t a music act that doesn’t owe Jacko, jack
So he’s always gonna sell as long as they’re about
Watching his life was an honour and I don’t mean no kinda disrespect to Madonna
But Michael was on a different level, and he adopted all of us in his songs
While he was trying to heal the world like a doctor.
I hope the money goes to the kids, as I hold these two O2 tickets. For his 50 date tour less than 50 days away so from his death at 50 wish he had 50 days more but never got half, pasted on the 25th of June and we should remember this day as his.
I believe he never left and he would never leave, never been a legend that lived that can ever breathe, never been a martyr that fought that can forever bleed, never been a leader that walked, that can forever lead, God will give him to us same God will to take him from us. Now he’s in his rightful place cause he was so heavenly. All for one and one for all he made a song for all, so I put a copy of his “Off The Wall” on the wall.
My town misses him, your town misses him, everybody since motown misses him. Now when you think of him picture him standing on a stage with his hand up one glove glistening, whole world at a standstill listening anticipating his next move the King is him.
From age 5 and the days of J5 he’s never took a break, no rest to take 5, there’ll never be a next the rest just ain’t Mike.
Time to pay our respects and watch the angels take flight
Out into the sky and never ever land, cos his house was in the sky and never, never never land.
Under all the pressure he never ever ran, he’s the best forever damn, who dressed forever glam.
The biggest man on the planet, not just a brother to Janet, our thoughts go out to his family,
He gave his hearts to the fans and he paved the way for the future, still his flame is in you, ‘cos he inspired song writers, record labels, producers,
They saying Michael Jackson was the King of Pop.
But I’m saying he was the King full stop.
People saying Michael Jackson was the King of Pop,
but I’m saying he was the King full stop
Join me tonight from 7pm on Radio 1 & 1Xtra celebrating the music of the first icon we have lost in our generation. No allegations. No ‘is he black or is he white’ hyperbole. Just good music.
JLS FT ME – BEAT AGAIN (REMIX)
For the longest time, I’ve been harbouring a secret rap ambition, well….I think the video speaks for itself:
GIGGS FT THE STREETS **EXCLUSIVE**
Last night my 1Xtra show was taken over by Mike Skinner aka The Streets. He brought the rest of his Beat Stevie family (Ted Mayhem & Magic Mike Millrain) and we had a great time: some laughs, some big tunes, we talked the twitter revolution, played the last ever skini-mix and a span a load of exclusives. All in all, a pretty hosh show. You can check the entire thing on the iPlayer here but we have to highlight the huge exclusive that Mike brought us:

Yes, Mike has produced a track for the ardest pon road Giggs and it got it’s world premiere on the show. Giggs ft The Streets “Slow Songs”
Here’s Mike talking about how the track came together:

This is by far my favourite Giggs track. What do you think?
CIARA IS TAUGHT THE MIGRAINE SKANK (VIDEO)
R&B superstar Ciara passed by Radio 1 & 1Xtra towers today to promote her new single with Justin Timberlake (“Love, Sex, Magic” – very sick song, AMAZING video!) and before she went to do Ace & Vis’ show on 1Xtra, I got a chance to interview her for my BBC Radio 1 show.
She was really nice & genuine and gave some great answers to my questions (you can hear the interview on my BBC Radio 1 show next week); and as Gracious ‘Nappa Man’ K was also in the studio, I took the opportunity to teach her the skank that is taking over the UK and introduce her to The Migraine Skank:
So there you have it – she may be cavorting with Justin Timberlake in her new video but Ciara can get down with the UK flavours too! Wonder if she’ll be doing it in her next video?
UPDATE: Ciara seems to be so taken by the skank, she twittered about it too!
BASHY x TODDLA T – MILLIONAIRE **EXCLUSIVE**
Were you listening to my Radio 1 show over the weekend? If not, you missed an interesting interview with Flo Rida (put it this way, he sounds like he’s not the sharpest tool in the box) and the WORLD EXCLUSIVE premiere of the brand new Bashy record “Millionaire” aka “Who Want’s To Be A Millionaire” produced by Sheffield bashment/hiphop/bassline/funky/electro don dada Toddla T.
Bashy also set the mission mixpossible challenge and then had the cheek to say I nearly failed when I clearly bodied it – check it all on the iPlayer here but if you can’t be bothered to hear the whole show (and you really are missing out)…

Make sure you cop “Catch Me If You Can” when it comes and check out my boy Bashy’s blog here.
You’re Only Young Once
After laryngitis stopped my appearance last time I was booked, this thursday sees my triumphant return to the legendary YOYO at Notting Hill Arts Club in West London ‘longside Seb “A&R Genius” Chew and Leo “Greenmoney” Greenslade.

Expect major murkage of epic proportions. If you’re not there, you love Cliff.
BENGA DUBPLATE RINSE OUT
As I said in my interview with LeftLion Magazine – 2009 is the year that Dubstep & Funky will take over. There’s so much quality music out there, it’s very exciting to be a DJ on national radio to be able to represent all genres and expose this music to a national audience.
I got into dubstep in early 2007 – quite a latecomer really. As with so many of us new school dubstep fans, it was one infectious bassline in particular that got us hooked – Benga & Coki’s “Night”. You could play that record to any crowd: from Rock, to Mainstream, to “Urban” to Dance…and everyone would go nuts. We tried to get Benga on the show to do a guest mix for us. And tried. And tried. Then as Magnetic Man’s “Cyberman” is Jam Hot this week and as Benga is one third of Magnetic Man (alongside Artwork and Skream), we were able to try again to get him into the show and this time we succeeded!
On Tuesday, armed with a bag of the freshest dubplates (yes, real dubplates – VINYL!!); Benga threw down the sickest of guest mixes after a brief interview about his past, present & future:

SOLDIERS AND TOAST? THE EXPLANATION!
First off, thank you to everyone who’s watched and commented on the ‘Egg Soldiers Beans & Toast’ parody video. Due to overwhelming demand, we’re looking into getting it available as a free download from the Radio 1 website – or a charity download for Comic Relief.
Thanks to those people who have noticed I’ve lost weight too – working hard at it at the moment. I’ve already lost a fair amount (and brought my BMI down significantly) but I’m still nowhere near my target weight for my wedding this summer. If you’re overweight too, watch out for the ‘Wedding Body Plan’ workout DVD with me in 2011!
The reason for this post is to answer all those critics who seem to have a problem with the chorus mentioning two types of toasted bread – one simply being toasted bread cut into strips. To answer your comments:
-
- Yes, I know that soldiers are made out of bread.
- Soldiers sounds very similar to shoulders which is why we used it.
- No, bacon or sausage wouldn’t have worked better there.
- If you toast 2 pieces of bread, you would simply cut one up into soldiers to dip into your egg yolk and the other would remain intact to hold your beans on top.
- Yes, you’re reading far too much into it – IT’S A PARODY!
